Armed escorts and police escorts in Nigeria
If you are planning a trip to Nigeria, someone may have told you to get a police escort. The rules changed in late 2025. Here is what the law allows today, how armed cover works and what a good protection team does around it.
The short answer on armed escorts in Nigeria
Private security companies in Nigeria are not allowed to carry arms. Since November 2025, police officers have been withdrawn from VIP escort duty, and VIPs who want armed protection have been told to request it from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
That means armed cover in Nigeria today must come from a lawful state source, and only when your plan truly needs it. A good private team plans and leads everything around it, and keeps you safe in the many moments where armed cover plays no part.
Why private security in Nigeria cannot carry arms
Private guard companies in Nigeria are governed by the Private Guard Companies Act, first passed in 1986. A 2007 amendment to the NSCDC Act gave the Corps the job of licensing, supervising and monitoring these companies, with the power to seal up any firm that works without a valid licence.
The law does not allow private guard companies to bear arms, and the NSCDC has warned licensed companies against it. Security experts and industry groups have called for the law to be reviewed, but for now the rule stands.
So if a private company offers you its own armed guards in Nigeria, walk away. You would be paying for something that puts you, and everyone with you, on the wrong side of the law.
What happened to police escorts in Lagos and across Nigeria
For years, many business people and visitors in Nigeria travelled with police officers attached to them. That changed on 23 November 2025, when President Bola Tinubu ordered the withdrawal of police officers guarding VIPs so they could return to core police work in communities.
Days later, the Inspector-General of Police said 11,566 officers had been withdrawn from VIP duty and redeployed. In early December 2025 the Force spokesman said any officer found escorting VIPs would be arrested, because they would be on illegal duty. Some officials who are entitled to protection by law kept their details.
In July 2026 the police issued a fresh signal saying the presidential order remains fully in force. Officers posted to guard facilities of national importance may protect those facilities only, and may not accompany private people outside them.
For you, the meaning is plain. Paying for a police escort in Lagos or Abuja as a private person is not a lawful option under the current order. If someone offers you one, ask hard questions before you agree to anything.
The NSCDC route to armed protection
The President's order said that VIPs who want protection should request well-armed personnel from the NSCDC. The Corps has said it is ready for the task, and some state commands have run VIP protection courses for their officers.
Public details on how private people apply, who qualifies and what it involves are still limited, and practice may differ from state to state. We check the current position before each job and tell you honestly what is realistic for your dates and places. If the answer is unclear, we plan as if armed cover will not be there.
How Blackwolf plans armed cover in Nigeria
We do not carry firearms in Nigeria, and we do not pretend to. Where a job needs armed cover, it comes from a lawful state source, and our team plans and leads the movement around it. Here is what that looks like.
- We decide with you whether armed cover is really needed for each part of the trip.
- We plan routes, timings and fallback routes, and check them before the day.
- We provide trained security drivers and arrange the right cars, including armoured cars from B4 to B6+ where the plan calls for them.
- We brief everyone in the movement, so there is one plan and one leader.
- We stay closest to you at all times, from the car door to the meeting room.
- We keep the plan quiet, so fewer people know where you will be and when.
When you do not need an armed escort
Armed cover draws attention. A convoy with guns on show tells everyone on the road that someone important is inside. For many trips in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, a low-key plan works better: a normal-looking car, a trained driver, a protection officer, good timing and routes that avoid known trouble spots.
Road trips between states, travel in higher-risk areas and some high-profile events are where armed cover is most often discussed. Even then, the first question is whether the trip should happen on those dates at all, and how. We will tell you when armed cover makes sense and when it would only make you more visible.

Questions people ask us
Can I still get a police escort in Lagos?
Not as a private person under the current rules. On 23 November 2025 the President ordered police withdrawn from VIP protection, and in July 2026 the police said the order remains fully in force.
Can private security companies in Nigeria carry guns?
No. Private guard companies are licensed by the NSCDC and are not allowed to bear arms. Be wary of any firm that offers its own armed guards in Nigeria.
How do VIPs get armed protection in Nigeria now?
The federal government has said that VIPs who want armed protection should request it from the NSCDC. Public detail on the process for private people is still limited, so we check the current position before each job.
Do I need an armed escort from Lagos airport?
Usually not. For most arrivals, a checked team, a trained driver, a normal-looking car and a well-timed route matter far more. We look at your case and tell you honestly.
Does Blackwolf carry firearms in Nigeria?
No. We work within Nigerian law. Where a job needs armed cover, it comes from a lawful state source and our team plans and leads the movement around it.
