How to hire a bodyguard in Nigeria

Hiring a bodyguard in Nigeria is easy. Hiring the right one takes a few good questions. This guide explains what a bodyguard should do for you, what to ask before you pay and how Nigerian law shapes what is possible.

What a bodyguard in Nigeria should do for you

A good bodyguard is not just a big man standing behind you. Most of the work happens before you leave the house. Your protection officer checks the route, the venue and the timing, knows where the nearest good hospital is, and has a plan for when the road is blocked.

On the day, the job is to keep you moving, keep strangers at a safe distance and spot trouble early. The best result is the problem that never reaches you. A good bodyguard is calm, polite and easy to forget until the moment you need them.

In Nigeria that also means knowing the city. Which roads lock up in the evening. Which hotel entrances are easy to watch. How long the Third Mainland Bridge can hold you on a bad day, and which way round is faster.

When you need a bodyguard in Nigeria

You do not need one for every trip. It is worth hiring a bodyguard in Nigeria when one or more of these is true for you.

  • You are well known, or your family name is.
  • You are visiting for the first time in years and many people know you are coming.
  • You are carrying cash, jewellery or valuable equipment, or attending events where others will be.
  • You are an artist or public figure with shows, appearances or fans.
  • You are travelling between states by road.
  • You are in Nigeria during protests or around the January and February 2027 elections.

Questions to ask before you hire a bodyguard in Nigeria

Before you pay anyone, ask these questions. A serious company will answer them without fuss. If the answers are vague, keep looking.

  • Who will lead my team, and what is their background?
  • Will you sign my NDA before we talk details?
  • How will you handle armed cover if my plan needs it? In Nigeria, private security staff are not allowed to carry guns, so anyone who promises their own armed guards is a warning sign.
  • Who drives, and are the drivers trained in protective driving?
  • What happens if a road is blocked, a car breaks down or someone falls ill?
  • Who is my single point of contact, day and night?
  • Will you post anything about me online? The answer should be no.

Armed or unarmed bodyguards in Nigeria

Under Nigerian law, private guard companies are licensed and supervised by the NSCDC and are not allowed to bear arms. Private security staff in Nigeria do not carry guns, whoever they work for.

Where your plan truly needs armed cover, it has to come from a lawful state source. Since November 2025, police officers have been withdrawn from VIP protection, and the federal government has told VIPs to request armed protection from the NSCDC instead. Our guide to armed escorts in Nigeria explains what that means in practice.

Most of the time, good unarmed protection does more for you than a gun. Smart timing, a normal-looking car, a checked route and a team that sees trouble early will keep you out of most bad situations. Armed cover is one layer of a plan, never the whole plan.

What affects the cost of a bodyguard in Nigeria

We do not publish one price, because no two jobs are the same. These are the things that change the cost of hiring a bodyguard in Nigeria.

Tell us your plans and we will send a clear quote and explain each line of it. If something in the plan is not needed for your level of risk, we will tell you.

  • How many protection officers you need.
  • How many days, and how many hours each day.
  • Which cities and states are involved.
  • Cars and drivers, and whether an armoured car from B4 to B6+ is part of the plan.
  • Airport arrivals and departures.
  • Events and venues that need checking in advance.
  • Armed cover from a lawful state source, where the plan needs it.

How quickly can you hire a bodyguard in Nigeria?

We have a team in Nigeria and can deploy anywhere in the world within 24 hours. For a simple airport pickup and a day in the city, short notice is often fine.

For December travel, large events or trips across several states, give us as much notice as you can. That gives us time to check routes and venues, book the right cars and brief everyone properly.

Working with your own staff and security

Many clients already have drivers, house staff or their own security. We work with them, not around them. Before the trip we agree who does what: who drives, who stays with you, who looks after the house and who speaks to the venue. One plan, one team lead and one line of contact keeps everyone on the same page.

If you travel with your own protection officers from abroad, we add local knowledge, Nigerian drivers and cars, and we brief your team on local law, including the rules on firearms.

Questions people ask us

Do I need a bodyguard in Lagos?

Not always. If you are well known, carrying valuables, attending big events or visiting during December, a bodyguard and a trained driver make a real difference. We will give you an honest view of whether you need one for your plans.

Can I hire a bodyguard in Nigeria for just one day?

Yes. Many clients book us for a single airport pickup, a meeting or an event. Even a short job gets a proper plan, a checked route and a briefed team.

Are bodyguards in Nigeria allowed to carry guns?

No. Private security staff in Nigeria are not allowed to bear arms. Where armed cover is needed, it has to come from a lawful state source, and our team plans and leads the movement around it.

How do I know my bodyguard is who they say they are?

Before you meet, you get the name and photo of your team lead and a simple check to confirm it is them. Never get into a car with someone you cannot confirm.

Can you protect my family while I am working?

Yes. We can cover school runs, shopping, social visits and time at home, with the same plan and team lead, so you know where everyone is and that they are safe.
